REPRESENTATION OF DISABILITY IN CASUALTY
REPRESENTATION OF DISABITY- CASUALTY.
In the clip of casualty the representation of disability has been shown in different ways using the comparison between two disabled characters as well as 'able' characters. We see disability being represented through the use of mise en scene, cinematography and micro elements in this constructed media clip.
Firstly we are introduced to Alex who is disabled and Adam his brother/carer. The first scene is of Adam trying on a top whist Alex sits in his wheel chair looking and possibly giving advise, this conveys the idea that an able person can get dressed and try clothes on in shops without any problem/trouble whereas disable people cannot representing the help they need for getting dressed and similar daily routines showing they're un-able to preform such tasks that an able person can do easily every day, we also see this a little later on in the toilet when Adam is helping Alex go to the toilet again this shows that disabled people are unable to do daily tasks because of their disability which is almost showing that it is a burden on them and others backed up by the idea that Alex, in the toilet scene says about a carer suggesting that he thinks Adam is fed up looking after him, so instead a carer who wants to help people in these situations would be better suited. We also see disability as being represented as embarrassing, this is suggested in the first scene when the shop assistant asks Adam if he would like to try on anything and Alex speaks about his disability and Adam says “alright, come on, lets go” showing that he doesn't want the shop assistant to hear any more so he takes Alex away from the situation, we also see the reaction shot of the shop assistant moving slowly and pulling a face showing she is shocked by Alex who is disabled. Then in the cafĂ© scene Alex says “does Jessica know you have a brother?” there is a pause and a reaction shot of Adam indicating that she doesn't insinuating that Adam is too embarrassed to tell Jessica about his disabled brother showing that it may put a girl off the fact his brother is disabled and he is known as a carer. Also in the cafe scene Alex is giving a biscuit with his order and Adam says “how come he gets a biscuit?” the high camera angle shows the same coffee but one with a biscuit showing that because of disability they're treated differently because Alex was given something extra possibly showing pitty for the fact he is disabled and different which could show that disability is seen as abnormal in society and therefore people give more to a disabled person like they would maybe a child suggesting that he is seen as a child needing constant care because he is getting something free which a child normally gets to maybe keep them quiet or to make them feel more special also showing that disabled people are not seen as fully grown adults they're seen as much less and are given free things to try comprehend that they're not able to do certain things so they're given freebies to make them seem more equal in society.
However in the clip there is another character called Ely who is also disabled although he does not have a wheelchair, Ely is seen as more able because he is doing shopping and walking alone without a carer or someone to help which an able person can also do, making him and disabled people the same and less abnormal, being able to preform the same tasks. Although we see some signs of pitty for instance the scene with the drunk girls, one girl says “awh, he looks lost, someone take him home” the 'awh' is something that is stereotypically thought that 'able' people say when they see a disabled person, they feel sorry for the person and empathize because they would hate to be in the situation which is shown from this scene. We also see the vulnerability of disabled people being represented through the character Ely when the hooded 'chav's are following him on their bikes, there is a close up of Elys face showing he is scared indicating that disabled people are more likely to be targeted which is a true fact in real life because they're seen as easy to attack because of how different they're also showing that they're vulnerable because Elly is changing his direction to get away from the 'chavs' and seems very scared then when faced with the 'chav's' he holds his bag close to him.
In conclusion in this constructed drama of causality disability has been represented in some positive ways through Ely who is seen to be more independent making disabled people considered part of society and following 'social norms' however it is mostly seen in a negative way through both of the disabled characters showing that in media and possibly even in real life disabled people are seen as embarrassing, vulnerable, pittyful, reliabilities, and possibly even abnormal and outsiders.

FRESH DPS Q&A INTERVIEW
FRESH: has one of the most famous girl bands with us today for an EXCLUSIVE interview, they have come all the way from a tour in America to see us today! We have all the members: starting from left to right: Britt, Rosa and Jaydee.
FRESH: hello, we heard you just came back from a massive tour in America! How was it?
B: Tiring, but amazing!
R: Yeah defiantly tiring, but it was worth it, it was our second major tour in America, just as amazing as the first time, maybe even better, our fans were great.
J: I agree with the others, we all love going to America so it was a great treat for us.
FRESH: Have you always wanted to be a singer?
J: Yeah since I was really little, it was nothing serious just me singing along to songs, until I was a bit older I started to enter in to the schools talent shows.
R: I wasn't really in to music properly until I was much older , then I began singing in my bedroom all the time, just having fun really..
B: I was the same as Rosa, just sung for fun when my favourite song came on, wishing one day I could be like beyonce! (everyone laughs) it’s a personal joke between us all, best not share( all laugh again)
FRESH: Did you all want to be in a band?
R: Yes! If it wasn’t for meeting these two and singing into our hair brushes, I don’t think I’d be a singer. We started off as great friends in middle school and became really close, we used to go round each other’s and play on singing games on the PlayStation. Jaydee would always win!
B: Well I didn't think I was going to end up being a singer at all but I couldn't have imagined doing it without these girls. Jaydee was by far the best but we are all just as good as each other now.
J: Too many compliments!, Well my dream was to be a singer no matter what, but I’m glad my dream came true with these two girls, we’ve had so much fun together, it would be boring without them!
FRESH: when did you realise you were famous?
B: erm, I don’t think It was till our first tour in America, we knew we were famous before then but it didn’t quite sink in until then, there was so many people coming to watch us, it was insane, we knew we had a lot of fans but not that many!
(The rest agree)
FRESH: Who was your idols when growing up?
B: BeyoncĂ© 100%, she’s just amazing, her and destinies child!
J: I had always wanted to be like Rihanna and I always wanted to have a voice like Whitney Huston.
R: Cheeky girls all the way! Loved them! (everyone Laughs!) I didn't really have an idol or someone I aspired to when I was younger I just used to listen to anything, Barbie girl and everything, my taste in music has improved a lot since then!
FRESH: What has been the most embarrassing thing you've done on stage?
J: One time I had a long dress on, and I stood on the bottom of it and almost tripped, didn't quite make it in the news, but I felt so awkward after.
B: I don’t think I have done anything embarrassing on stage..
J: You have, that time you forgot the words.
B: Oh yeah, I didn't get much sleep before a gig we did so I forgot the words but it was okay I covered it up by facing my microphone to the audience to get them to sing it, no one noticed, our fans knew the words very well!
R: Mine is similar to Britt’s, I forgot to turn on my microphone, so I started singing then realised no one could hear, everyone just laughed.
FRESH: Have you ever dated another singer or celeb?
R: Well at the moment I am currently dating Niall from One direction, I’m surprised not many people, know.
B: Me and Drake have been an item for a while, we haven’t made it official yet, but I think we’ve both decided it’s time to let people know.
J: me and Justin Timberlake used to date, but we were both too busy with our music careers so we are just friends now, I think it’s made us better friends.
FRESH: Have you ever brought your own album?
J: No, I did think about it but I thought it would look a bit strange buying my own CD, although I did think about it.
B: well I haven’t personally but I did get my mum to buy it, she’s not really one for listening to the charts so I told her to buy my CD instead, now in the car she always plays our CD!
R: Yes, (blushes) I put some sun glasses and a hat on (everyone laughs) so no one would recognise me and went in, I got some funny looks considering it wasn't very warm outside
FRESH: If you weren't a singer would other job would you be doing?
R: I would have been a teacher! I love children, who know I could have been a music teacher, but I would have loved to look after younger children.
J: i’m not too sure, I wanted to be a singer so I focused on that and didn't really consider anything else, it would maybe be in the fashion industry, or magazine editing..
B: erm, I would have either been a photographer, I've always loved photography, or in the fashion industry, it’s always been my dream since I was very little, I wanted to bring out my own clothes range, I even designed my own clothes at one point, you never know it could come true!
FRESH: for someone starting out in music, what advice would you give them?
B: I would just say, keep trying, don’t give up and don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it.
J: keep training your voice, but don’t overdo it.
R: I think the girls pretty much covered it, I wouldn't aim to high at first.
what do you think you’ll all be doing in the next 10 years?
J: well hopefully we will be massive and will gain even more fans!
R: Well we should have loads of new albums by then and like Jaydee said, hopefully we’ll have even more fans!
B: Hopefully we can collaborate with some other bands or singers, it’s too soon to say yet but me and Drake my work together in a song sometime soon!
FRESH: when is your next single out?
R: our next single is out very soon actually! It’s out in July the 12th! We are just making finishing touches to it, make sure you all buy it!
FRESH: Thank you guys, you have been great.
